Below I put together some key features to look for when selecting the epilator for your needs.
1. There are three types of epilators: rotating spiral wire, rotating disks or multiple tweezers
The spring type epilator has springs that are coiled together or apart so that when in use the springs capture the hair and pull it out. Because these springs are flexed continuously, they tend to fail often. Even so, don't worry because the springs can be bought separately and you can change them anytime you like.
The second type, the rotating disc type uses the same technique like the first one, but instead of using coiled springs, it uses rotating discs.
The last one and maybe the best type is the tweezer type which is considered to be the most modern epilator ever. This type has plates which are not complete discs. When the head of the epilator rotates, these plates are moving together and apart once per revolution, which creates a tweezing effect. So, when they came close to the skin, they pull out the hair and release it when the plates separate away from the skin. You should know that epilators come with different amount of tweezers and having more tweezers mean a faster epilation.
There is no striking difference in these models, so I am not going to debate which is better, they all work and choosing a model is just a personal preference.
2. Dry or wet option
Although an epilating process works better on dry skin, more and more women have started to prefer the wet epilation because it is kinder to the skin, therefore the level of pain is lower. This model of epilator is designed especially to work in the shower or underwater and because it is cordless, you should always charge it before each use.
As I said above, epilators come with different amount of tweezers. For sure, when someone wants to buy an affordable epilator, she doesn't specifically search for one with a certain number of tweezers, but knowing this information will help her.
A low number of tweezers doesn't automatically mean that you will have a bad experience, it only means that the epilation period will slightly increase and maybe you will need to go more than once over a certain area. Also, a higher number of tweezers doesn't mean a better epilation, in this case, the pain can increase and if you are new to this method, you will be discouraged to try again.
4. Level of pain
The epilation can be painful because this process means removing the hair from the root, pulling it out rapidly. Also, if you are using for the first time an epilator, the session will be slightly painful and longer.
To ease the pain, some epilators come with specific accessories like a cooling pack: a small bag of gel which you have to put it into the fridge or freezer before the epilating process and a glove with a hole in it to put this bag of gel; with the glove, you will massage the skin area and afterwards you can start the epilating; or with cooling wipes.
5. For different areas of the body
Most women use the epilator only for legs and arms, but if you want to use it for other areas, like underarms, bikini line or face, you should look for an epilator which has special heads. It is not recommended to use an epilator designed for large areas on sensitive skin.
6. A cordless or corded epilator
Cordless epilators are convenient because they are easy to pack, perfect for holidays or they can be used underwater. But corded epilators are more powerful because they are always plugged in during the epilating session and you never have to worry about charging it.
7. Speed setting
Nowadays most of the epilators come with 2 speed settings, but there are few models which have only one speed setting. If you are a beginner or you want to use the epilator on sensitive areas of your body, a 2 speed setting option is preferable. In this way, you can adapt the speed, low or fast, therefore, the amount of pain.
8. Built-in light option
This option is great to see the short hair or the hair from the shadowy areas of the body. The light is necessary if you want to get rid of all the unwanted hair, even though it is short and thin. I personally find this option very useful.
The epilators range from 30 to 120 dollars. It is your personal choice which one you will buy it, but keep in mind these features, when you will choose the right epilator for you. So, it doesn't matter if you buy a cheap epilator or an expensive epilator, as long as you are satisfied with its performances.
Reading these tips you will be able to know how to choose an epilator correctly. But, don't buy an epilator just because it is popular or your friend has it too. You should buy it because:
- First, if you consider that you will use it. Don't buy it, try it and leave it in your closet. Epilation is a great way to remove unwanted hair and if you have an epilator, you should use it regularly. Only if you are in a hurry, you can go back to shaving.
- Secondly, that the technology behind it is helpful for your needs. For example, if you have a sensitive skin, you should choose an epilator which has a barrier against bacteria; if you are sensitive to pain, you should buy an epilator with fewer tweezers and which has different caps for different body areas.
